H.E Joaquim Chissano

President, Mozambique (1986–2005)

Bio:

H.E Joaquim Chissano served as the second president of Mozambique from 1986 to 2005. One of his notable accomplishments was steering reforms that led to the birth of the 1990 constitution which allowed a Multi-party system.

In 1992 he negotiated with the former rebel group RENAMO ending 16 years of civil war. 

He served as the Chairperson of the Africa Union from 2003 to 2004; He was also the Chairperson of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and member of the panel of Eminent Persons of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). In 2005 He was appointed as the Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for the Summit to Review the Implementation of the Millennium Declaration and is currently the Chairperson of the Joaquim Chissano Foundation
