What will become of oil-producing countries with the shift to green energy?

As the shift towards green energy gathers steam, there are many who are beginning to wonder what will become of oil-producing countries, particularly those in Africa.

Africa produces 9.6% of the world’s oil. The continent is home to 5 of the world’s 30 oil-producing countries, namely, Nigeria, Angola, Algeria, Libya, and Egypt. These countries are heavily dependent on oil exports for economic development. In Angola, the second-biggest oil-producing country in Africa, hydrocarbon contributes to 90% of the country’s exports. In Algeria, the oil and gas sector generates 95% of the country’s exports.

Is Africa going green? While shifting to green is becoming a major concern for developed countries, the situation may be different in Africa. In a continent where load-shedding and blackouts have become the norm, access to energy is of the utmost importance. However, steps are being taken to paint Africa’s future green. There has been an 80% reduction in solar prices over the past decade. In addition, countries such as Egypt, Ethiopia, South Africa, Kenya, and Morocco have shown a commitment towards accelerating the use of renewable energy. These developments beg the question; will oil-producing countries be able to successfully transition towards green energy sources?

What do our readers think? Kwena said, “No. there is no future, simply because green energy is cheaper, and people are shifting towards green energy because it’s also safe to use.”
