What is the biggest threat to security in Africa?

Insecurity is amongst the persistent challenges that continue to plague Africa. The continent has witnessed many incidences of political and ethnic violence, extremism, genocide, gender-based violence, and terrorism over the years. It is also home to a number of conflict hot spots which include the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Somalia, South Sudan, Mali, and Nigeria.

The consequences of insecurity can be far-reaching and devastating. Instability can result in weakened state institutions, an increased rate of poverty, low economic growth, and widespread loss of life. Furthermore, some conflicts are self-perpetuating and continue unabated for years as opposing groups fight for resources and power thereby causing a humanitarian crisis. South Sudan and the DRC are notable examples of this.

There may still be a long way to go before long-lasting, continent-wide peace and security is attained. Africa is the only continent in the world where political violence increased in 2020 relative to 2019. What needs to be addressed and redressed before Africans can feel safe and secure in their home countries?

What do our readers think? One of our readers Pearltee said, β€œAfrica is filled with corruption, drugs, violence, and power-hungry politicians with vaulting ambition. Every politician always promises to do better at making things better for the poor and needy but once they get to the top, they become corrupt and greedy and forget the promises they had made before.”

We spoke to the former Director of Political Affairs, Khabele Matlosa to hear his perspective.

For another perspective, we spoke to ONE Champion, Lurit Yugusuk.

What is the biggest threat to security in Africa? What will it take to attain peace in unstable and conflict-ridden countries? Let us know your thoughts and comments in the form below, and we’ll take them to policymakers and experts for their reactions!

The security threat in Africa us dictatorships from internal and external

The biggest security threat in Africa at the moment is expansion of China and Europe and US. Their reliance on raw materials from Africa and resources such as gold, Oil πŸ›’οΈ and agricultural goods results in the need to control the African countries producing raw materials and minerals. This often sparks off conflicts.

VK
Neocolonialism. Super power countries arm militia groups in Africa 🌍 to destablise peace and security so that they take away natural resources such as crude oil, gold, diamond and diatomite when they come disguised as Peace πŸ•ŠοΈβœŒοΈπŸ•ŠοΈβœŒοΈ Makers.

In Nigeria we have a system that is tolerant of killer herdsmen but furious against law-abiding and armless agitators and protestors.

I beg to differ. It might be true that violence in Africa increased in 2020 but it would be unfair to unilaterally paint it as the only continent whose situation increased. What of the situation in Rohingya in Myanmar, Asia, police violence in South and North America, the yellow vest movement in France and the Catalonian secession in Spain, Europe to name a few?

The below mentioned countries are the biggest threat to peace and security in Africa and their downfall shall come soon. πŸ‘‡πŸ‘‡ France and USA.

Many things will be addressed if BIAFRA got there independent. BIAFRA will Laine a foundation that other African countries will emulate. BIAFRA is the only democratic ethnic groups in Africa. So for those who love justice, equity, fairness and democracy should join hand to restored BIAFRA. Fail to do so, Africa will never rise beyond this. Africa must say NO for bringing different ethnic groups that there culture, religion and faith are not the same as one country, just as it's here in Nigeria

I can't say for other countries but here in Nigeria all we need is separation, let every regions go there own way

AH
Lack of adequate manpower, lack of funding and sophiscated military hardwares.

TB
Not just our leaders alone we our selves are part of the threats in Africa Take for example when a particular region in a country takes it upon their to fight insecurities and bad governance the other regions would now gang up to fight the other region just because it's their own that is ruling The biggest threat is religious/ethnic difference which have blinded us

impunity the haves cant be touched and can do anything to get away with crime and can deal with anyone standing on their way ...if we can have a system where all of us can be below the constitution and adhere to it half of african problems are solved and if we develop some sense of self worth for just a little while and see the much blessings in our lands and all that comes with whites we take it as a second thought we are good to go as a continent

MH
our ignorant old men parading themselves for elections to rule the youth.. and the Western world too is greatly part of it refusing the Black Race to unite..

JN
The colonialist should go and allow Africa address their issues themselves. And the white doesn't really consider anything that concerns Africa without bringing racism in it... Every country in Africa has one incited problem or the other. The French, US & Britain should leave Africa for them to settle their problems themselves.
